If the upper ball joint needs repair, the entire control arm needs to be replaced. To do this, you need a unique tool to release the ball joint from the control arm below. Fortunately, this tool is not expensive and is worth purchasing to complete the process at home. The first thing to do is lift your BMW off the ground and place the jack rack under the frame for safety. Lift the jack rack as close to the frame as possible. Remove the wheel with a lug wrench and remove the rear control arm bushing bracket attached to the body with a sleeve and ratchet.
